Independently owned yet part of the wider brand, Specsavers Donegal like to support local businesses and keep money in the local community, first using the paper Shop Local vouchers and moving to using the high-tech Donegal Gift Card for their team for Christmas 2024.
Benefits
The main benefit for Specsavers is the ability to give back to their community through their staff rewards. As the new Donegal Town Gift Card is eligible to be used with the Small Benefit Exemption, Specsavers were able to use it to reward their team, tax free. Specsavers say that the ease of use of the Gift Card, the support for local and the ability to reward staff tax free mean it is a no-brainer for them to use the Donegal Town Gift Card for staff rewards.
“Our staff loved receiving the Donegal Town Gift Card at Christmas 2024. The ease of use is incredible, staff don’t have to worry about change as they just use the Gift Card and the balance is automatically updated. Over 70 Donegal businesses accept the Gift Card. Some staff used their €1,000 Gift Card to get new tyres on their card. Others used it in a local supermarket to do their big Christmas shop. The great thing is that staff don’t have to use the whole amount in one go, so it’s never wasted.
Experience of using the card
Specsavers Donegal bought physical Donegal Town Gift Cards for their team as they wanted to hand the card out and thank each team member in person. They also purchased a digital version of the card, and appreciate the choice of either a physical or digital card, to suit staff needs. Specsavers ordered their cards online with the physical cards arriving within 2-3 days. Once the cards had arrived, they contacted Miconex so the cards could be unlocked (they are locked during transit for security), added a handwritten note to the accompanying card holder, and handed them out to their team.
Experience accepting the card
As well as gifting the Donegal Town Gift Card to their team for Christmas, Specsavers also accept the card as payment. After previously accepting the town’s paper Shop Local vouchers, Specsavers appreciate how easy the new Gift Card are to accept as a merchant, and the fact that there is no commission for them to accept the card, unlike the national Gift Cards. They encourage all merchants to get involved with their local Town & City Gift Card, pointing out that the more businesses accept the card, the greater the success the program will have overall.
